Historical Facts about Dead Drops

Dead Rats

Rats have been used by both the CIA and KGB. One problem with this type of dead drop is that Moscow and New York cat population would eat the rat. The CIA and KGB found an easy solution to that; they poured liberal doses of Tabasco on the dead drop and scavenges became disinterested in them.

Rocks

"Rock" left in a Moscow street and allegedly used by British agents to plant a transmitter. Data from the rock was then supposedly downloaded on to a palm-top computer. Devices like the "Rock" have been used in intelligence gathering to send encrypted messages for several years, although it remains unclear why agents should have chosen a Moscow street for their alleged spying operation.

Hollow Coins

Hollow coins were first used by Soviet agents in the 1930s to conceal microdots, soft film, and cyphers. Americans discovered the ruskie’s ingenuity in 1953, when a paperboy in Brooklyn dropped a nickel that surprisingly split open when it hit the ground to reveal a secret compartment within. The coins had been traded back and forth between Soviet spies operating in New York City.
